#TurnerPrize2014 Winner Duncan Campbell

Duncan Campbell:

Video art, filmmaker, conceptual artist - explores appropriation through the value and ownership of objects in his award winning documentary film titled 'It for others'

Others have said it provokes a powerful narrative, showing art within a moral context, addressing political issues. it forces us to think about our place in the world

(A still from the film ‘It for Others’ by the Dublin-born artist Duncan Campbell (PA))

Campbell looks at ideas of objects from an abstract sense with his main influence deriving from French filmmakers Chris Maker and Alain Resnais, film 'Les Statues Meurent Aussi' (Statues Also Die) (1953). A film relating to traditional art from west Africa.

With links of death within the purpose of objects highlighted we are forced to consider issues such as commercialization and consumption. The film suggests African art died at the hands of these issues and replaced by the Western market as it was ever growing and accessible.

Campbell expanded from this and look from a more historical perspective, social views and ideas of value. for an art film, it breaks free from our preconceived idea of poorly scratchy films made on a old camera with little or no quality, 'It for Others' is done to a high standard, although viewers have said they struggle to find a narrative they can follow. Campbell has created something in between our idealized view of what a film should be, its not quite a high production film with a clear narrative structure, but it is not what you'd expect from an art film either.
