Practice 1A: Post-Impressionism Art Movement

1880s-1900s:

Main artists of this movement were:

Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890),

Paul Cézanne (1839-1906),

Paul Gauguin (1848-1903),

George Seurat (1859-1891)


The term Post Impressionist shows a link between the original Impressionists and a departure from those idea, developing the initial movement and their journey from past to future.

Roger Fry: Devised the term 'Post Impressionism' at the time when he was preparing for an exhibition at The Grafton Gallery in London 1910 titled 'Manet and the Post Impressionists'
(November 8, 1910 - January 15, 1911)




Key Characteristics: 

Eclectic, 

Aspects of Impressionism exaggerated, 

Vibrant colours, 

Energetic brush stokes, 

Expressed emotional qualities, 

Paint used thickly on canvas.

Van Gough’s paintings projected his emotions; he used energetic brushstrokes, thick paint on canvas (Impasto) vibrant colours, intensified.
